Cresta sewing machine tension spring replacement?

I have a Cresta machine made in 60's by Favta in eastern europe or switzerland and rebadged in the UK.
I inadvertently caught the thread tensioning spring the other day and broke it off.
Now, how critical is the form of the spring in replacing it? I see lots of springs for sale on-line but none
look like mine and probably no chance of getting an original part.
I have attached a photo of how *I think* it was oriented before breaking but at the break point on the right hand side
the steel is upturned which cannot be and so my notion of orientation is wrong!

sew(!), any advice welcome...
